5S is the name of a workplace organization method that uses a list of five (5) Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke. The 5S pillars provide a methodology for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment. In the daily work of a company, routines that maintain organization and orderliness are essential to a smooth and efficient flow of activities.
This methodology encourages workers to improve their working conditions and helps them to learn to reduce waste, unplanned downtime, and in-process inventory. While some Lean Six Sigma (LSS) practitioners consider 5S a tool, it is more than that. 5S is a visually-oriented system of cleanliness, organization, and arrangement designed to facilitate greater productivity, safety, and quality. When fully implemented, the 5S process increases morale, creates positive impressions on customers, and increase efficiency of an organization.
Employees will feel better about where they work, the effect on continuous improvement can lead to less waste, better quality and faster lead times. Besides increase productivity, improves quality, reduces cost, 5S also contributes for delivery on time, improves safety and improves morale. 5S is not a list of action items, but is an integrated concept of actions, condition and culture. To get the greatest success, the nature and implication of each “S” need to be understood by each employee from the top level to bottom and should be regularly practiced.
